Elise Joyner
Alyssa Adair’s 1st Grade Class
Blackridge Elementary School

Name of activity: Emotion/Character Circle
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of the activity: Embody an emotion or situation to understand how that would feel or what it would look like; use words that lend themselves to opinion statements
Management notes: Emphasize the importance of having quiet mouths and keeping to your own space
Procedure:
·      Everyone stands in a circle. There is a teacher or facilitator in the middle.
·      Everyone in the circle turns so that they are facing the outside of the circle.
·      The facilitator will say an emotion or a situation that the people in the circle will embody with their faces, posture, and breath. The people in the circle will have a moment to think of how they will react.
o   Possible emotions or situations: happy, sad, angry, excited, playing on a beach, going to school, playing at home, eating, etc.
·      On the count of three (said by the facilitator), everyone in the circle will turn around to face the inside of the circle and do their embodiment. They will freeze in this position.
·      The people in the circle (still in their frozen position) can look around the circle to observe how others perceive the same situation in a different way.
Possible time: 5-10 minutes

Name of activity: Cross the Room
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of Activity: Help students recognize common characteristics of an opinion compared to a fact.
Objective: By the end of the activity, students will be able to identify common words/types of words used in opinion statements and statements of fact.
Preparation: Before the activity, create a series of statements on a topic that will evoke an opinion from participants. Also, create a series of statements of facts.

·      O: I like to eat ice cream.
·      O: Reading books is fun.

Procedure:
·      Ask participants to create two lines facing each other.
o   There should be some distance between the two lines and roughly an equal number of participants on each side.
·      The teacher will read a statement out loud.
·      If the individual participant agrees with the statement or if it is true, they will cross the room and join the other line. If the individual participant does not agree with the statement or if it is not true, they will remain standing in the line.
·      The activity is repeated with each new prompt.
o   The teacher will start with the opinion statements. After doing several opinions, ask the class what kind of words, specifically verbs, have been used in these opinions.
o   The teacher starts to add in fact statements. Take time if needed to talk through why a statement is a fact or opinion.
·      When desired, stop and unpack or process the participants responses to the statements.
Assessment: Each student will write one opinion statement and one fact statement to check understanding of the difference between the two. They will use one of the words that we identified as be specifically for opinion statements or fact statements.
Possible time: 10 minutes
