Fourth Visit! (October 30, 3018)
For this visit, we did three different activities to support
the ELA standard the class was learning for the week: parts of speech.
The first activity that we did was the “Name Fame” game that
we played on our first day. The past couple of visits, a number of students had
asked to play this again, so I found a new way to integrate this same game into
different curriculum. As we went around the circle, each student stated their
name and an adjective about them. Miss Adair reviewed the concept of an adjective
before we began, stating that it is something that describes the noun; this
could be a physical description, feeling, or anything that appeals to the five
senses. Most students chose to state their feelings or a positive word about
their personalities: excited, funny, sad. There were a few students who also chose
to describe some physical attributes such as hair color. I was impressed with
the variety that the students produced in their adjectives. As many of them
appealed to their emotions and feelings, we were able to take a moment to
foster emotional development and unity as a class.
The next game that we played was “Yes, Let’s…” This game focused
on students identifying and producing verbs. We stood up in the same circle
that we used for the first game and went around the circle in a similar manner.
The person whose turn it was stated “Let’s [insert an action/verb].” The rest
of the class would repeat “Yes, let’s [same verb the person just said]” and
then did the action together. The turns would go around the circle in this way.
After the game, I asked the students to name off some of the verbs we used.
They did so successfully and showed that they grasped the concept we explored
together.
("Let's have a dance party")
("Let's do the splits")
The last activity that we did was “Charades” to solidify the
class’s idea of nouns. The class was split into small groups. Each student was
given a slip of paper with a noun on it and had the task of acting it out for
their group. Their group members had to guess what was on the slip as well as
they type of noun it was (person, place, thing, or animal). Once a noun was
guessed correctly, the turn moved to the next person in the circle. All of the
students did well with this activity and were not afraid to give their acting
their best efforts. There are very creative students in this class!
I love being able to work with the students in this class as
well as Miss Adair! I learn something new every time I visit the class and am
working implement that each time I teach.
