About Me


My name is Elise Joyner. I am an Elementary Education major at Brigham Young University. I am an Arts Bridge Scholar for drama integration in the classroom through the BYU Arts Bridge Partnership.

Growing up, I was constantly participating in theatre. I did shows with a local community playhouse as well as my local high school. I have participated in numerous theatre camps and workshops. Most recently, I have taken several theatre and theatre pedagogy classes at BYU to learn how to integrate dramatic activity into the everyday classroom.

I will be working with Alyssa Adair at Blackridge Elementary School to help her integrate drama with the Utah core curriculum. Alyssa began teaching about 4 years ago and is excited learn new art forms. Together, we will be focusing on English/Language Arts standards with an emphasis on parts of a story, storytelling, and identifying different characters in stories.

It is going to be a great semester!

First Visit! (September 18, 2018)

For the first visit with Miss Adair’s class, I wanted to get to know the students and introduce them to the subject of drama. My goal was to get them to become comfortable with moving and developing expressions so that we can build on that from here on out. Name Fame The first activity that we did was a name game entitled “Name Fame.” For this activity, we sat in a circle and listened to each person say their name and one thing that they are “famous” for. In between each person’s turn, we clapped and repeated the phrase “Name game, name game, what’s your name and what’s your fame.” I only had to repeat this phrase twice before the students caught on. Once they figured out the phrase, they excitedly chanted it and were proud to share their name and facts. Through this activity, the students were able to practice speaking loud in front of the entire class. Third Visit! (October 23, 2018)

This visit was great! I feel like we made break throughs with curriculum and made important connections with the activities we did. The first activity that we did was called “Emotion Circle.” The students stood in a circle with me in the middle. They started by facing the outside of the circle. I called out an emotion or a situation for them to think about how they would portray it with their bodies and faces. On the count of three, they turned around and struck a pose to show me what that specific emotion or situation meant to them. We did things such as happy, sad, excited, going to Disney Land, first day of school, etc. The students responded really well and gave plenty of variety in their answers. At the end of the game, we made the connection that everyone feels things differently and has different interpretations of the same topic. Second Visit! (October 16, 2018)

Today was an exciting day! It was the first day that we integrated dramatic activity into the curriculum that the class has already been learning. We started out with the Number Levels game that we played last time. The students were excited to show me that they remembered how to play from the previous visit. We were able to jump right into this game without much instruction. This served as a warm-up to get the kids moving and thinking. The main focus of the lesson was on teaching “5-Finger Retell” through drama. “5-Finger Retell” is the different parts of a story broken down so that children can begin to analyze a text: 1) character, 2) setting, 3) problem, 4) solution, and 5) plot. The class has been talking about this concept over the past couple of weeks, so I wanted to use an activity that could help them solidify the idea and assess if they can pick out each part within a story.
