Alyssa Adair’s 1st Grade Class
Blackridge Elementary School

Name of Game: Name Fame- Adjectives
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of the game: To learn names, something about the person, and to get the students focused and ready for the day’s activities; to identify adjectives that describe the student
Common Core Standard
  • ELA: Language Standard 1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
    • Specifically, adjectives
Procedure:
  • Everyone sits in a circle
  • They start clapping a pattern by clapping their thighs, then their hand, then thighs, etc. to a steady beat.
  • While clapping to the beat, the group repeats “Name game, name game, what’s your name and what’s your fame?”
  • The group stops clapping after saying the phrase once.
  • The first person in the group then states their name to the class and an adjective about themselves.
  • The group then starts clapping and repeating the phrase.
  • The next person in the circle then states an adjective about themselves.
  • This pattern continues until everyone in the circle has had a chance to say their name and fact.
Possible time: 10 minutes

Name of Game: Yes, Let’s…
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of Game: Use movement to show who a student is portraying/what the action is that they are doing
Common Core Standard
  • ELA: Language Standard 1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
    • Specifically, verbs
  • Drama: Standard 1.T.P.4: Use body to communicate meaning through space, shape, energy, and gesture.
Procedure:
  • Stand with your students in a big circle and decide which direction the game will travel.
  • Begin the game by inviting them to complete an action, for example, “Let’s wobble like a jellyfish!”.
  • The rest of the circle energetically reply “Yes, let’s!” and all begin to move like a wobbly jellyfish (staying in one spot, of course).
  • Everyone continues the movement until the next person in the circle changes the action by saying “Let’s…” with the new action that they want the class to mimic.
  • The group replies “Yes, let’s!” and change their movement to match the new action.
  • Continue around until everyone has had a turn changing the action.
Assessment: During the game, the teacher will check for understanding as each student is asked to tell a verb for the class to do.
Possible time: 5-10 minutes

Name of Game: Charades
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of game: Reinforce the concept of a noun through movement
Common Core Standard
  • ELA: Language Standard 1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
    • Specifically, nouns
  • Drama: Standard 1.T.P.4: Use body to communicate meaning through space, shape, energy, and gesture.
Preparation:
  • Noun cards
    • Person
      • President of the United States of America
      • Moana
      • Kristoff (from Frozen)
      • Hercules
      • Mr./Mrs. Incredible
    • Place
      • school
      • playground
      • home
      • park
      • library
    • Thing
      • table
      • book
      • computer
      • ball
      • shoe
    • Animal
      • dog
      • cat
      • rabbit
      • monkey
      • pig
      • lion
      • frog
Management notes:
  • Explicitly explain the following:
    • How to take turns- one person will act at a time.
    • How to guess- if you want to make a guess, you can say it out loud while the person is acting. Do not shout nor talk over someone. Speak one at a time.
    • Guessing the answer- if someone makes a right guess, the person acting out the word tells them that it is correct and then sits down. The next person in the circle will then do their action. If the guess is incorrect, the actor will say no and then continue to act out their card.
    • Teacher will model one round to help students clearly understand how the game works and what is expected of them.
Procedure:
  • The class is split into 5 groups (4 kids in each group with 2 groups of 5). Each group finds their own space in the room.
  • Each member of the group is given one of the noun cards (teacher may need to help students read and know specific word on the card they have). They do not show the other members of the group what they have on their card.
  • One student at a time will act out what is on their card so that the other members of the group can guess what they have. In addition to guessing the object that the student is acting out, the other group members have to say if it is a person, place, or thing.
    • Make sure to explain that in charades, you only use gestures and movements. No sounds, no talking.
  • The turns continue like explained above as each student has an opportunity to act out their card and have the others guess.
Assessment: The class will come back together after everyone has had a chance to act out their card. As a class, have a discussion about the different nouns the class saw in the activity. Ask questions about adjectives and verbs as well to make sure they know the difference. Use associated actions that can help students remember the part of speech in addition to activity that reinforced the concept.

Possible time: 10-15 minutes
