Name of activity: 5-Finger
Retell: Character Study
Grade: 1st Grade
Purpose of the game: Reinforce
5-finger retell and parts of speech. Study specifically how characters are
nouns and explore adjectives that describe them.
Common Core Standard
· Drama:
Standard 1.T.CR.5: Create character through imagination, physical movement,
gesture, sound and/or speech and facial expression.
· ELA:
Speaking and Listening Standard 4: Describe people, places, things, and
events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
Materials:
· Click,
Clack, Quack to School! By Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin
· Pictures
of cows, chickens, pigs, duck, Farmer Brown, school kids (all pictures come from Creative Commons resources)

Procedure:
· Review 5 finger retell. With each finger,
review whether it is associated with a noun, verb, or adjective.
· Tell students to focus on the characters
and how to describe them while reading the book.
· Read Click,
Clack, Quack to School!
· After reading the story, ask students to
name the characters they heard from the story.
· Allow each student to pick a select a
specific character they would like to focus on. Give them the picture for the
character they selected.
· Allow time for students to color picture
of selected character. Put picture on a popsicle stick with tape to create a
puppet.
· Group students together on carpet
according to their character.
· Read the book again and have students
participate by holding up their puppet when the character’s part happens in the
book. They can make the sounds of each character.

Before beginning the reading, have
a discussion about how puppets can be used to show characters, actions, and
emotions.
· Ask students to use adjectives to
describe their characters.
Assessment: During the activity,
the teacher will check if students understand the concept of a noun and
adjective. Teacher will also check to see if students can recall 5-finger
retell with little prompting.
